These six paintings are part of a series, numbering 20 to
date, begun in the autumn of 2002 with a clear desire to remember a specific
place on the Earth, Hendricks Creek Canyon . An ancient and pristine natural
setting on the edge of the wilderness, this place has been intentionally
developed in to an Art and Nature Retreat site intended to invite quiet,
Reflection, remembrance and creative expression. It is from this calm and
intense place these paintings came forward and into focus. Crossings: A

Africa spawned the races of Earth those eons ago. Much has been said that contributions to modern life in its development have not matched the promise. Nevertheless, cultures and traditions developed in bright and gaudy fashion, completely within the limits imposed by harsh environments and from the rocklike steadiness of its creation, the expressive cultural traditions of music and dance to the quiet beautiful stateliness of its people in somber reflection Africa has endured. Preparing my own paint allows me to explore the intrinsic qualities of natural matter, minerals, and manufactured pigments in my landscape based works. In these works I employ motifs from the urban landscape imbued with personal experience of hidden and symbolic space. Initially architecture and infrastructure serve as skeletal imprimatura for pattern and organic forms that coalesce during the complex pigment layering process. Recurring motifs from the built environment include grids, arches, bridges, and from the natural environment, caves, seeds, and stars. |

| Textiles have always had resonance for me and I was quite certain from the outset that whatever my ideas were they would make their physical form as textiles. I enjoy the accessibility of the applied arts and the history and cross-cultural traditions of the textile craft processes but the development of my ideas draw upon fine art. When I graduated at the Royal College of Art in 1982 I described my work as large-scale hand painted one off pieces of textiles. | |||||

These two pieces are concerned with
visual irony.
The first piece "The Secret" is a painting on two panels. The second piece "Shirt" is crocheted of rope. Crochet usually connotes delicateness and femininity. Since I absolutely love using unexpected materials with which to crochet and knit, the result is this piece that shows crochet needn't look like a granny made it. Besides, the "Shirt" weighs about 75lbs. My initial motivation for creating these pieces was not to communicate
visual irony. These two pieces are concerned with visual irony. The first piece "The Secret" is a painting
